Membership and fees

Benefits

Joining Plett u3a is a great way to find and develop new interests and make friends. Here are some of the reasons to join:

Requirements

In a word, there are none, other than providing your contact details so that we can stay in touch with you.

No qualifications are required and none are awarded.

There is no minimum age for joining, although the general age is 50+ years. Members are usually retired or semi-retired persons, or people whose flexible working hours enable them to attend Plett u3a activities during week day ‘working’ hours.

Plett u3a has adopted the French Union of Universities of All Ages (UTA) philosophy: membership is open to anyone with free time without age and educational requirements.

Membership cards and other U3As in South Africa

Plett u3a issues new membership cards to all of its paid up members annually. The colour of the cards changes each year.  Members are kindly requested to always wear these cards to every Plett u3a event, so that we can distinguish our members from visitors and also so that people can more easily get to know each other.

As a general rule members of one South African U3A branch can attend meetings of another South African U3A branch free of charge if they wear their membership badge. See our Other SA U3A branches list to find other branches and their website links.

Guests/Visitors

We welcome visitors to all of our events. The cost is R30 per person.

In the case of outings visitors must accompany Plett u3a members.  This is to ensure that non-members with no interest in Plett u3a do not take places that would otherwise be available to our members.  Outings need to be pre-booked as the number of attendees is always limited.

Fees

The fee is currently R200 per person. Renewal subscriptions are due before 31 March. Membership runs from 1 January to 31 December. Should you join mid-year (from July onwards) the fee will be R100 per person.  Please note that this discount does not apply to late membership renewals. Your subscription fees are used to fund the administration costs of Plett u3a, which includes the costs of our venue, refreshments, speakers, and other related matters.

Membership form and payment

Please complete the online membership form and send proof of payment to u3aplett@gmail.com. The banking details are on the form.

Alternately, please download and print the membership form and hand in your completed form, together with your payment, to our treasurer (or in his absence any committee member) at the next meeting.

In the case of married couples, we ask that each person completes the form, so that we can get to know the interests of all of our members. Also, as some couples do not share the same email address, we want to be sure that you both receive our communications – or that at least one of you does.
